How to Buy and Sell Stocks and ETFs on Vanguard

Investing through Vanguard is a smart choice for those who want access to low-cost ETFs and a user-friendly platform. While it is most renowned for its long-term investing philosophy, it still allows individuals to buy and sell stocks and ETFs on Vanguard easily. This guide will walk you through the step-by-step process of buying and selling ETFs on Vanguard, using the popular VOO ETF as an example.

Before you can begin trading, you must have an active Vanguard brokerage account with available funds. If your account is already funded, y

ou’re ready to go. Here’s how you begin the process.

Unlike some brokers with a clearly labeled “trading platform,” Vanguard integrates trading features within your account dashboard. To access the trading function:

  1. Log into your Vanguard account.
  2. From the main menu or drop-down navigation, select ETFs under the investment options.
  3. Click on “Buy an ETF.”

This brings up the terms and conditions page that you’ll need to read and accept before placing any trades.

To proceed with trading:

  1. Click “Continue” after reading the initial terms.
  2. You will be presented with several (around five) pages of additional disclosures and terms. Carefully review each page and accept them.

While it may seem tedious, accepting these terms is necessary to gain full access to ETF and stock trading capabilities on Vanguard.

Once you’ve completed the initial setup and accepted all necessary agreements, you’ll have access to buy or sell securities.

To initiate a trade:

  1. Navigate to the Balances section.
  2. Select “Trade ETFs” to start your first investment.

For demonstration, let’s walk through buying a share of VOO, one of Vanguard’s most popular ETFs.

VOO is Vanguard’s ETF that tracks the S&P 500 Index, representing the performance of 500 large-cap U.S. companies. It’s a favorite among investors looking for broad exposure to the U.S. stock market with a single fund.

Some benefits of VOO include:

  • Diversification across multiple sectors.
  • Low expense ratio.
  • Strong historical performance.
How to Buy and Sell Stocks and ETFs on Vanguard

To purchase VOO:

  1. Enter the ticker symbol “VOO” into the search or order box and hit Enter.
  2. You’ll be shown the current market price—at the time of this example, it was $533.64.

Let’s say your account only has $30. Fortunately, Vanguard allows partial ETF investing, meaning you don’t need to buy a full share.

Note: Partial investing is available only for ETFs and mutual funds—not individual stocks.

Now choose how much you want to invest:

  1. Select the option to Buy by Dollar Amount (instead of by share).
  2. Enter your desired investment amount (e.g., $20).

⚠️ If you’re buying a partial share, you must use a market order, which buys at the current market price. Limit orders are only available for full shares.

Although some investors may prefer limit orders for greater control over price, using a market order is usually fine for highly liquid ETFs like VOO.

Before finalizing:

  1. Click “Preview Order” to review all the details of your transaction.
    • You’ll see the ETF name, ticker, dollar amount, and an estimated number of shares based on the current market price.
  2. If everything looks correct, click “Submit Order.”

You will receive a confirmation and an order number, indicating that your order has been placed.

After submitting the order, return to your Dashboard:

  • Look for updates to your balance and account activity.
  • If you used a market order, the trade will typically process almost instantly during trading hours.

In our example, after purchasing VOO, the ETF began to rise, and the account balance reflected a new value of $304.

To see what you currently own:

  1. Navigate to the Holdings section.
  2. Scroll down to find:
    • ETF name (e.g., VOO)
    • Quantity owned (including fractional shares)
    • Current market value
    • Performance for the day

This is your investment summary, and from here, you can also initiate a sale if you choose to do so.

Selling an ETF is simple:

  1. From the Holdings window, click on “Transact.”
  2. Choose “Sell” from the options provided.
  3. Vanguard will automatically prefill:
    • The ETF you wish to sell.
    • The number of shares (defaults to all available shares).

You can confirm or edit the amount if you don’t want to sell your entire position.

⚠️ Important Note: If you are selling all your holdings and you own fractional shares, Vanguard states that the sale of these fractional shares may take up to one additional business day to fully process.

Also, do not attempt to sell the same security more than once in the same day, especially if you’re trying to clear out the remaining fractional shares. Doing so may create confusion or duplicate transactions.

Here are some additional tips for trading on Vanguard:

  • Use Market Orders for Partial Shares: Limit orders are not available for fractional ETF shares, so you’ll need to use market orders when investing small amounts.
  • Avoid Frequent Trading: Vanguard is optimized for long-term investing. Excessive short-term trading could result in restrictions or account flags.
  • Check Fees: While ETF trades are usually free, double-check if any account maintenance fees apply depending on your account type.
  • Reinvest Dividends Automatically: You can set your account to automatically reinvest dividends from ETFs and mutual funds.

Investing in ETFs on Vanguard is beginner-friendly once you’ve navigated the initial setup. Here’s a quick recap:

  • Navigate to the ETFs section and accept all required disclosures.
  • Use the search tool to find an ETF, such as VOO.
  • Vanguard supports partial ETF investing with market orders.
  • After purchase, your holdings are visible on the dashboard.
  • Selling is just as easy, with a few clicks from the Holdings tab.

Whether you’re investing $20 or $2,000, Vanguard makes it possible to build a diverse portfolio using low-cost, high-quality ETFs. Just remember to invest wisely, understand your order types, and think long term.

By following this guide, you now have all the essential steps to buy and sell stocks and ETFs on Vanguard. Happy investing!
