How to Fund your ETRADE Account

How to Fund your ETRADE Account

If you’re ready to start investing, the first step is to fund your ETRADE account. Fortunately, ETRADE makes the process straightforward by allowing you to connect your bank account and transfer money directly into your brokerage account.

In this guide, you’ll learn exactly how to fund your ETRADE account, how to link a bank, and what to expect after making your first deposit.

Before You Fund Your ETRADE Account

Before you can fund your ETRADE account, you need to link an eligible bank account.

Open the ETRADE app and follow these steps:

  1. Tap Menu in the bottom-right corner.
  2. Select Pay & Transfer.
  3. Tap Transfer Money.
  4. Choose Add an External Account.

Once your bank is connected, you’ll be able to transfer money into your brokerage account whenever you want.

Choose Between Instant and Manual Verification

When linking your bank, ETRADE gives you two verification methods.

Instant Verification

This is the fastest option.

You’ll securely sign in to your online banking account from within the ETRADE app. Once your identity is verified, your bank account is linked immediately, allowing you to transfer money the same day.

Manual Verification

If you prefer not to log in through the app, you can verify your account manually.

You’ll enter your routing number and account number, and ETRADE will send two small test deposits to your bank account. After the deposits arrive, you’ll confirm their amounts inside the app.

This process typically takes up to three business days.

For most users, instant verification is the quickest and most convenient option.

How to Start Instant Verification

To begin instant verification:

  1. Select Instant Verification.
  2. Tap Securely Add Account.
  3. Request the verification code.
  4. Enter the six-digit code you receive by text.
  5. Leave Automatically Link Account selected.
  6. Accept the transfer terms and conditions.
  7. Tap Continue.

Next, you’ll see a list of supported financial institutions.

Select Your Bank

Search for your bank if it doesn’t appear in the initial list. ETRADE supports thousands of financial institutions, making it easy to find most banks.

After selecting your bank:

  • Sign in using your normal online banking credentials.
  • Choose the account you’d like to connect.
  • Authorize the connection.

ETRADE uses a secure third-party connection service to verify your account. Your banking username and password are submitted directly to your bank rather than being stored by ETRADE.

Once authorization is complete, you’ll return to the ETRADE app where your bank account will be ready to link.

Tap Submit to finish the process.

Why You Should Never Link a Credit Card

When choosing an account, always select a checking or savings account.

Using a credit card to finance investments is generally not recommended because:

  • Credit card interest rates are typically very high.
  • You’re investing borrowed money.
  • Credit cards aren’t designed for brokerage transfers.
  • Bank accounts provide a much smoother transfer experience.

Checking and savings accounts are the appropriate funding sources for brokerage deposits.

When Your Deposit Becomes Available

The availability of your funds depends on where the money is coming from.

If you’re transferring between two ETRADE accounts, your funds may become available immediately.

If you’re transferring from an external bank account, ETRADE often provides buying power right away, allowing you to begin investing immediately. However, the funds typically take one to three business days to fully clear before they can be withdrawn back to your bank account.

This means you can usually begin investing without waiting for the full settlement period.

Is There a Minimum Deposit?

One advantage of ETRADE is that there’s generally no minimum amount required to fund a standard brokerage account.

Whether you’re depositing $10 or several thousand dollars, the process is exactly the same.

What to Do After You Fund Your ETRADE Account

Once you fund your ETRADE account, the next step is deciding how to invest your money.

Take time to research investments that align with your financial goals, risk tolerance, and investment timeline. Many beginners start with diversified investments such as ETFs or broad-market index funds before exploring individual stocks.

Learning how to build a balanced portfolio is just as important as knowing how to fund your ETRADE account, helping you make informed decisions as your investments grow.
