How to Activate Your 5% Cash Back Category on Chase

How to Activate Your 5% Cash Back Category on Chase

If you have a Chase Freedom card with rotating quarterly rewards, you can earn 5% cash back on certain purchases throughout the year. However, there is one important step you need to take: you must activate the current 5% cash back category before you can earn the higher rate.

The good news is that activation takes less than a minute. Here is exactly how to do it through the Chase mobile app.

Which Chase Cards Have a 5% Cash Back Category?

The rotating 5% cash back offer applies to eligible Chase Freedom cards that have quarterly categories. It does not apply to every Chase card.

For example, Chase Freedom Unlimited and Chase Freedom Rise do not have the same rotating 5% category that requires quarterly activation. If you have a different Chase card, check the rewards terms for your specific card.

How to Activate Your Cash Back Category

Start by opening the Chase mobile app. You should see your Chase accounts listed on the main screen.

Find your eligible Chase Freedom card and tap on it. Once you are on the card’s account page, scroll down past your balance and payment information.

Look for a section labeled “5% cash back.” This section shows the current quarter and whether you have activated the offer.

If the status says “Not activated,” you need to activate it before your purchases will qualify for the 5% rate.

Tap “See details” and then select the option to activate your rewards.

Check the Current 5% Categories

After selecting the activation option, you will see a page called “5% categories.” This page shows which types of purchases qualify for the bonus during the current quarter.

The categories change every three months. For example, one quarter may include gas stations, while another could feature grocery stores, Amazon purchases, restaurants, or other spending categories.

For the quarter shown in the example, the qualifying categories are gas stations, public transit, EV charging, select live entertainment, and United Way donations.

Always check the current list before making purchases. The categories can change from one quarter to the next, so you cannot assume that a purchase that earned 5% last quarter will continue to do so.

How to Apply for a Chase Credit Card

$1,500 Quarterly Limit Explained

The 5% cash back rate applies to up to $1,500 in combined purchases across the eligible categories during each quarter.

Once you spend more than $1,500 in qualifying purchases, additional spending earns the standard 1% rate instead of 5%.

If you use the full $1,500 limit, you can earn up to $75 in cash back per quarter. If you maximize the bonus in all four quarters, that adds up to $300 in cash back over a year.

That makes it worth checking your cash back category before making larger purchases, especially when your regular spending lines up with the current bonus categories.

Don’t Miss the Activation Deadline

Chase also provides a deadline for activating the quarterly offer. In the example, the deadline is September 14, 2026.

If you do not activate the offer by the deadline, you will not receive the 5% bonus for that quarter. Activating it after the deadline does not give you a way to claim the missed rewards retroactively.

For that reason, it is better to activate the offer as soon as the new quarter begins rather than waiting until you are ready to make a qualifying purchase.

Activate Your Cash Back Category Every Three Months

One of the easiest mistakes to make with a Chase Freedom card is assuming that activation happens automatically.

It doesn’t. You need to activate the new cash back category every quarter.

When a new quarter begins, the categories change and the activation resets. If you forget to activate the new offer, purchases in those categories will generally earn the standard rewards rate rather than the 5% bonus.

A simple way to avoid forgetting is to set a calendar reminder for January 1, April 1, July 1, and October 1. These dates mark the beginning of each new quarterly rewards period.

When the reminder pops up, open the Chase app, check the new categories, and activate the offer. It only takes a few seconds.

Make the Most of Your Chase Freedom Card

The rotating 5% cash back program can be an easy way to get more value from your Chase Freedom card, but only if you remember to activate the offer.

Each quarter, check the current cash back category, review the qualifying purchases, and keep the $1,500 combined spending limit in mind. Then make sure you activate the offer before the deadline.

Once you get into the habit of checking it at the start of every quarter, you can avoid accidentally earning 1% when you could have earned 5%.
