How to Find and Download Your 1099 on SoFi

If you use SoFi for investing or banking, you may need to access your tax documents when filing your taxes. SoFi makes it easy to find your 1099 directly in the app and download a PDF copy.

Your available tax forms depend on the SoFi products you use and whether you had reportable activity during the tax year. Here is how to find your 1099 on SoFi step by step.

Where to Find Your 1099 on SoFi

To find your 1099 on SoFi, start by opening the SoFi app and going to the main screen.

  1. Tap your profile icon in the top-left corner.
  2. You will see your profile and a menu with several options.
  3. Tap Documents.
  4. You will be taken to the Document Center.

At the top of the Document Center, SoFi explains that not every document listed will necessarily apply to you. The documents you receive depend on the SoFi products you have and the transactions or activity you had during the year.

Below this message, you will see a Tax Statements section.

Filter Your 1099 on SoFi by Account

The Tax Statements section has two drop-down menus. The first is Account Type, which defaults to all accounts.

You can choose from:

  • All Accounts
  • Invest
  • Money

If you want to see your investment tax forms, select Invest. This filters the documents to show the 1099 forms associated with your SoFi brokerage account.

The Money option is for your SoFi banking activity.

If you leave the account type set to All Accounts, you will see tax documents from all of your eligible SoFi products in one place.

For example, you may see a 1099-MISC for referral bonuses or rewards, as well as a 1099 Consolidated for an Invest account. The 1099 Consolidated form contains information about your reportable investment activity for the year.

When Is Your 1099 on SoFi Available?

SoFi typically makes 1099 tax forms available by around mid-February for the previous tax year.

If you check your account in January and do not see your 1099 yet, that does not necessarily mean there is a problem. Tax documents may simply not be available yet. Check the Document Center again later.

Why You Might Not Have a 1099 on SoFi

Not every SoFi investor will receive a 1099 every year.

SoFi generally issues a 1099 when you have reportable activity, such as selling an investment, receiving dividends, or earning certain amounts of interest.

For example, if you opened a new investment account, deposited money, bought a stock, and simply held it without receiving dividends or selling anything, you may not have a 1099 for that year.

Once you start having reportable activity, such as selling investments or receiving dividends, you may receive the applicable tax forms.

Short-Term vs. Long-Term Capital Gains

When you sell an investment for a profit, the amount of tax you may owe can depend on how long you held the investment.

If you hold an investment for one year or less before selling it for a profit, the gain is generally considered a short-term capital gain. Short-term gains are generally taxed at your ordinary income tax rates.

If you hold an investment for more than one year before selling it for a profit, the gain is generally considered a long-term capital gain and may qualify for lower tax rates.

Your 1099 can contain information about your investment sales and other reportable activity that you may need when preparing your tax return.

Dividends Can Appear on Your 1099

Dividends are generally taxable in the year you receive them. This can apply even if you use a dividend reinvestment plan, commonly known as DRIP, to automatically purchase more investments.

In other words, you may not have received the dividend as cash in your bank account, but the dividend can still be considered taxable income.

That is why you may see dividend income reported on your 1099 even when you immediately reinvested the money.

What About a Roth IRA?

A Roth IRA has different tax treatment from a standard taxable investment account. Qualified Roth IRA investments can grow tax-free, and qualified withdrawals in retirement are generally tax-free.

SoFi allows customers to open a Roth IRA through its platform. However, retirement accounts have specific tax rules, contribution limits, and withdrawal requirements, so make sure you understand the rules that apply to your situation.
