This guide explains how to open an ETRADE account, what information you need to provide, which optional trading features you may want to avoid as a beginner, and how to fund an ETRADE account.
Opening an ETRADE account is a straightforward process that can be completed through the ETRADE mobile app or on a computer. For most new investors, an individual brokerage account is the best place to start. Once the account is approved, you can link your bank account and make your first deposit.
How to Open an ETRADE Account
To get started, download the ETRADE app and open it. You can also use ETRADE on a computer if you prefer a desktop experience.
On the login screen, select Open an Account. You will then see the different types of accounts ETRADE offers.
ETRADE provides several account categories, including brokerage, retirement, managed portfolios, small business, and banking accounts. For most new investors, the standard brokerage account is the most appropriate choice.
Select Brokerage and then choose Open an Account.
Choose Your Brokerage Account Type
ETRADE gives you three main brokerage account options:
- Just for you: An individual brokerage account held in your name.
- You and someone else: A joint account shared with another person, such as a spouse or partner.
- For a minor: A custodial account designed for investing on behalf of a child.
If you are opening an account for yourself, select Just for you and continue.
ETRADE will then ask whether you are an existing customer. If you do not already have an ETRADE account, select No and continue.
A progress bar will appear at the top of the application so you can see where you are in the process.
Enter Your Personal Information
The first part of the application asks for your contact information. You will need to provide details such as your:
- First and last name
- Middle initial, if applicable
- Phone number
- Email address
Use your legal name exactly as it appears on your government-issued identification. Avoid nicknames or shortened versions of your name because ETRADE uses this information to verify your identity.
Next, enter your residential address, including your street address, city, state, and ZIP code. Use your actual home address rather than a PO box or business address.
Complete Identity Verification
ETRADE will ask for your date of birth and Social Security number.
Providing your Social Security number is a standard requirement when opening a brokerage account in the United States. Financial institutions collect this information as part of identity verification and regulatory requirements.
Enter the requested information accurately and continue through the application.

Provide Your Employment and Financial Information
The application will ask about your employment status or occupation. You may see options such as employed, self-employed, retired, student, or business owner.
Choose the option that most accurately describes your situation.
ETRADE will also ask about your financial and investing background. This can include:
- Annual income
- Liquid net worth
- Total net worth
- Investment experience
- Marital status
Answer these questions honestly. You do not need to have a high income, substantial assets, or investing experience to open a brokerage account. If you are a complete beginner, indicate that you have little or no investment experience.
Decide Which Trading Features You Need
One of the more important parts of the application is the optional trading features section. ETRADE may give you the option to add:
- Options trading
- Margin trading
- Futures trading
These features are not necessary for ordinary long-term investing.
Margin allows you to borrow money from the brokerage to make investments, which can increase both potential gains and losses. Options and futures can also involve significant risks and may not be appropriate for inexperienced investors.
If your goal is simply to buy stocks or ETFs and hold them for the long term, you can leave these features unchecked. You can generally apply for additional trading capabilities later if your investment experience and strategy change.
Answer the Regulatory Questions
ETRADE will ask several regulatory and account-related questions. These are standard questions used by financial institutions.
You may be asked about the source of your wealth and the source of funds you expect to use in the account. You may also need to indicate whether any of your funding comes from outside the United States and explain the intended purpose of the account.
Answer each question truthfully based on your own circumstances. For a typical investor, the purpose may be general or long-term investing.
Add a Trusted Contact and Check for Promotions
ETRADE may give you the option to add a trusted contact person. A trusted contact is someone ETRADE can contact if it has concerns about possible financial exploitation or your well-being.
A trusted contact does not receive access to your account and cannot make trades or move your money.
You may also see a field for a promotional code. ETRADE periodically offers bonuses to new customers who meet certain deposit requirements. Promotional offers can change, so check the current terms and eligibility requirements before relying on a particular code.
If you have a valid promotional code, enter it and make sure ETRADE confirms that the code was successfully applied before continuing.
Review the Brokerage Agreements
Before completing the application, ETRADE will present various agreements, disclosures, and regulatory documents.
Take some time to review the important information, particularly the client relationship summary, brokerage agreement, privacy policy, and applicable regulatory disclosures.
Once you have reviewed and accepted the required documents, continue to the next step.
Create Your ETRADE Login
You will now create your ETRADE user ID and password.
Choose a unique user ID that is not easy for someone else to guess. For your password, use a strong combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and other required characters.
Avoid using birthdays, names, or other easily guessed information. A password manager can also help you create and securely store a strong password.
Pay close attention when entering your password because ETRADE may not ask you to enter it a second time for confirmation. Use the option to display the password temporarily and check for typos before submitting it.
Verify Your Phone Number
ETRADE will send a verification code to the phone number associated with your application.
Select the option to send the code, then enter the six-digit code you receive by text message. Verification codes are time-sensitive, so enter the code promptly.
After successful verification, you can submit your application.
Wait for Your Account to Be Approved
After submitting your application, ETRADE may approve the account immediately or place the application under review.
If your application requires additional verification, ETRADE may provide a reference number and notify you when the review is complete. Additional verification does not necessarily mean there is a problem with your application.
If ETRADE needs more information, it will contact you through the appropriate communication channel. Make sure the email address and phone number you provided are accurate.
How to Fund an ETRADE Account
Once your brokerage account is open, the next step is to deposit money so you can begin investing.
To fund an ETRADE account through the mobile app, open the menu and select Pay & Transfer. Then select Transfer Money.
Before making your first deposit from an outside bank, you need to link that bank account to ETRADE.
Link Your Bank Account
Under the transfer section, select Add an External Account.
ETRADE may provide two ways to verify your bank account:
- Instant verification: Connect to your bank electronically and verify the account quickly.
- Manual verification: Enter your bank’s routing and account numbers and wait for small test deposits to confirm ownership.
Instant verification is generally the faster option. Manual verification can take several business days because you need to wait for the test deposits and then confirm their amounts.
Select the verification method that works best for you.
Use Instant Bank Verification
If you choose instant verification, select Securely Add Account and complete the requested security verification.
ETRADE will show a list of supported financial institutions. Search for your bank if it is not immediately visible.
You will then be directed through a secure connection to your bank. Sign in using your normal bank credentials and select the checking or savings account you want to connect.
Do not use a credit card as your funding source. Investment deposits should generally come from a bank account rather than borrowed credit.
After reviewing the authorization information, give the required permission to connect the account. You will then return to ETRADE, where the linked bank account should appear as an available funding source.
How to Fund an ETRADE Account With Your First Deposit
Once your external bank account is connected, you can make your first deposit.
Return to Menu, select Pay & Transfer, and then choose Transfer Money.
Under the transfer form, select the bank account you want to transfer money from. Then select your individual brokerage account as the destination.
Enter the amount you want to deposit and select the desired transfer date. Review the details carefully before submitting the transfer.
You do not need to make a large initial deposit simply to open a standard brokerage account. You can choose an amount that fits your investment plan.
Understand ETRADE Buying Power and Transfer Times
When you fund an ETRADE account from an external bank, the money may not immediately be available for withdrawal.
ETRADE may provide buying power that allows you to begin purchasing eligible investments before the transferred funds have completely settled. The time required for the funds to fully clear can vary depending on the transfer and account circumstances.
Before making a withdrawal, check the available and settled balances shown in your ETRADE account.
Confirm Your Deposit
Before submitting the transfer, ETRADE will display a preview showing the source account, destination account, amount, and transfer date.
Review everything carefully and submit the transfer.
You should then receive a confirmation showing the transfer details and a confirmation number. At this point, you have successfully funded your brokerage account and can use the available funds according to the applicable account and trading rules.
Final Steps After You Fund an ETRADE Account
Knowing how to fund an ETRADE account is only the beginning. The next decision is how you plan to use the money.
For a long-term investment strategy, many investors focus on diversified investments such as broad-market ETFs or other investments that match their goals, risk tolerance, and time horizon.
Opening an account and making a deposit is relatively simple, but choosing investments requires more thought. Before placing your first trade, understand what you are buying, the risks involved, and how the investment fits into your overall financial plan.
