If you want to send money to friends, family members, or other people you know, you can use Zelle on Chase directly through the Chase mobile app. The setup only takes a few minutes, and once you have added a recipient, future payments can be completed in just a few taps.
This guide explains how to set up Zelle on Chase, add a recipient, and send a payment safely through the Chase app.
How to Set Up Zelle on Chase
To get started with Zelle on Chase, open the Chase app and tap Pay & Transfer in the bottom toolbar.
On the next screen, you will see several options, including:
- Pay bills
- Send money with Zelle
- Wires & global transfers
- Transfer
- Deposit checks
Tap Send money with Zelle.
If this is your first time using Zelle in the Chase app, you may see a quick popup introducing Zelle shortcuts. Tap Get started to continue.
You will then reach the Zelle welcome screen. Chase notes that the first payment you make to someone at another bank may take one to two business days to arrive. After that initial payment, subsequent payments between you and the other person are generally much faster.
Review the Zelle service agreement and privacy notice, check the box confirming your agreement, and tap Next.
Choose Your Zelle ID
Chase will now ask you to select your Zelle ID. This is the information other people can use to send money to you.
You can choose:
- Your phone number
- Your email address
- A new phone number or email address that Chase does not already have on file
A phone number can be a convenient choice because people may already have it saved in their contacts.
After selecting your preferred Zelle ID, tap Next.
Chase will send a one-time verification code to the phone number or email address you selected. Enter the code and tap Next.
What If Your Zelle ID Is Already Used at Another Bank?
If you have previously registered the same phone number or email address with Zelle at another bank, Chase may tell you that the Zelle ID is already in use.
You can choose to move that Zelle ID to Chase and make Chase your primary Zelle bank for that phone number or email address.
Keep in mind that pending payments at your previous bank may be canceled when you move the Zelle ID, so it is best to wait for any pending payments to clear before switching.

Confirm Your Zelle Setup
After verification, Chase will show a confirmation screen letting you know that you’re all set.
Check that your name appears correctly. This is the name other people will see when they send you money.
You will also see the registered phone number or email address and the Chase account where your Zelle payments will be deposited.
At this point, you can also view your Zelle QR code or add additional Zelle IDs.
Use Your Zelle QR Code
Your Zelle QR code is a convenient way to receive money in person.
Tap Show the Zelle QR code to display your code, name, Zelle ID, and receiving account.
Someone paying you can open their banking app, choose the option to scan a Zelle QR code, and point their camera at your screen. Their app can then automatically fill in your information so they can enter the payment amount and send the money.
You can also use the Scan option to scan another person’s QR code. If someone sends you a screenshot of their code, you may be able to select it from your phone’s photos instead of scanning it directly.
Chase also allows you to register up to one U.S. mobile number and up to four email addresses as Zelle IDs.
When you are finished, tap Done.
How to Add a Zelle Recipient
Before you can send money with Zelle on Chase, you need to add the person you want to pay.
From the Pay & Transfer screen, tap Send money with Zelle again.
The first time you use the feature, Chase may show a safety notice explaining that Zelle is intended for people you know and trust. Read the information, acknowledge the notice, and tap Got it.
You will then reach the payment screen. Tap the Add button in the top-right corner.
You will see options to add a Zelle recipient or a bill pay recipient. Choose Add a Zelle recipient.
Chase gives you several ways to add someone:
- Add them from your phone contacts
- Scan their Zelle QR code
- Enter their information manually
If you are adding the recipient manually, enter their name and at least one of the following:
- U.S. mobile phone number
- Email address
- Zelle tag for eligible businesses
For a person, a phone number or email address is generally all you need.
Once the information is entered, tap Add recipient.

Stay Safe When Using Zelle on Chase
When you add a new recipient, Chase may ask why you are sending the payment. The options can include moving money, paying a business or bill, or paying a friend, partner, or family member.
Choose the option that accurately describes your payment.
This safety step is designed to help protect customers from scams. If someone is pressuring you to select a particular reason or is telling you to send money to a person you do not know, stop and reconsider the payment.
Zelle is designed for payments to people and businesses you know and trust—not strangers you meet through social media or other online platforms.
How to Send the Zelle Payment
Once your recipient has been added, you can make your payment.
Select the recipient and enter the amount you want to send. Before completing the payment, Chase will display important information about the recipient.
You may see:
- The nickname you saved for the recipient
- Their legal name under Registered as
- Their phone number or other Zelle ID
- How long their Zelle ID has been active
- Your current sending limit for that recipient
Pay particular attention to the Registered as name. You might have saved someone as “Mike” or “Mom,” but the registered name shows the person whose Zelle account will actually receive the payment. If the information does not look right, stop and verify the recipient before continuing.
Enter the amount you want to send. You can also add a message for the recipient.
Next, choose the Chase account you want the money to come from if you have multiple eligible accounts.
You can also use the Send on option to schedule a payment for a future date. If you make recurring payments, such as rent, you can use the Repeat payment option where available.
When everything is correct, tap Review & send.
Review Your Zelle Payment Before Sending
The review screen is your final opportunity to check the payment before it is sent.
Carefully verify:
- Recipient’s name
- Registered name
- Phone number or Zelle ID
- Payment amount
- Chase account being charged
- Payment date
- Message
This step is especially important because Zelle payments generally cannot be canceled once you send them to an enrolled recipient.
If something is incorrect, use the back arrow to make changes. If everything looks right, tap Send it now.
You should then see a confirmation screen with a check mark confirming that Chase is sending your money.
The recipient may receive the payment within minutes. However, remember that the first payment between you and another person may take one to two business days to arrive. Later payments between the two of you are generally much faster.
Tap Done when finished.
What Happens to Your Zelle Recipients?
After you send your first payment, the recipient will be saved in your recent recipients.
The next time you want to send money with Zelle on Chase, you can simply open Zelle, select that person, enter the amount, and send the payment.
Chase may also separate recipients into those who are already enrolled with Zelle and those who are not. An enrolled recipient can receive the money directly. If someone is not enrolled, they will need to sign up to claim the payment.

Final Tips for Using Zelle on Chase
Using Zelle on Chase is straightforward once you complete the initial setup. The most important thing is to verify the recipient carefully before sending money.
For your first payment to someone new, check their registered name, phone number or email, and the amount before confirming. Never send a Zelle payment to someone you do not know or trust, and be especially cautious if someone is pressuring you to make a payment.
Once you have added a recipient, future Zelle on Chase payments are much quicker because their information is already saved in your account.
